Canto Chico is an area on the outskirts of Lima. People who are looking for a home come there to begin to build their lives by finding an area on a hillside and putting up walls for a house. There is little electricity or running water – but they manage to have shelter. Both Sisters, Anne Davis and Maria Vasquez, do many things, from going to the prison for men, to having an everyday after school program for the children of the area.
They visit the sick and are a support for many of the families near them. The importance of just being a loving presence was the gift that I received from both Canto Chico and Las Brisas de Villa. The Sisters take up daily the joys and hopes, difficulties and sorrows of the Peruvian people, especially those living in the barrios who are landless, lacking food and healthcare, and the opportunity for an education.
